Gross domestic product (GDP)German: Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP)

Gross domestic product measures the value of goods and services produced within a country over a period, net of intermediate inputs.

In plain language

Nominal GDP uses current prices. Real GDP adjusts for price changes and helps compare production growth. GDP per person relates output to population.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Let’s make it concrete

If nominal GDP rises 5% while prices rise strongly, real growth may be considerably lower.

Simplified example for illustration.

Worth understanding

GDP is not a complete measure of wellbeing. Distribution, unpaid work and environmental damage are captured only partially.
